Babar Azam Sets New T20I Benchmark, Surpassing Virat Kohli

Pakistan skipper’s half-century seals series and sets a fresh T20I mark.

Pakistan captain Babar Azam created a new benchmark in T20Is on Sunday, as he reached his 40th fifty-plus score, surpassing India’s Virat Kohli (39), reported ANI.

The streak was reached in the decider against South Africa as Babar’s calm half-century nudged him clear atop the all-time charts.

Babar hit 68 off 47 balls in Lahore as Pakistan chased down 140 to seal the three-match series 2–1, ESPNcricinfo reported.

The innings was laced with crisp stroke-play under pressure and got the reply underway after early wickets.

This record adds to Babar’s run of landmarks this week. On Friday, he became the leading run-scorer in the format, going past Rohit Sharma, during Pakistan’s nine-wicket win in the second T20I, according to the ICC.

With Kohli and Sharma retired from T20Is, Babar is the only active batter among the top three in both runs and 50+ scores.

Sunday’s victory for Pakistan had been built on Babar’s anchor role and incisive bowling, led by Shaheen Shah Afridi. With six wickets down and six balls left, the hosts finished the chase and won the series after coming back from behind, showing how important Babar is in critical occasions.

Editor’s note: Figures refer to 50-plus scores (fifties and hundreds) in men’s T20 Internationals.
