Indian Veteran singer Asha Bhosle dies at 92 in Mumbai; PM Modi pays tribute

India mourns one of its most celebrated playback voices after her death was confirmed in Mumbai on Sunday.

Indian playback singer Asha Bhosle has died in Mumbai at age 92, according to family confirmation reported by Indian news outlets.

Bhosle died Sunday, April 12, 2026, at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai. The hospital confirmed to The Hindu that she died of multi-organ failure.

She had been admitted to the hospital on Saturday evening after suffering a chest infection and exhaustion. The hospital said she also experienced cardiac arrest and pulmonary complications.

Bhosle, the younger sister of late singer Lata Mangeshkar, recorded more than 12,500 songs in multiple languages over a career that spanned eight decades.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said she was one of India’s most iconic and versatile voices.

In the statement, Modi said Bhosle’s musical career enriched India’s cultural heritage and touched audiences around the world. He also extended condolences to her family, admirers, and music lovers, saying her songs would keep inspiring future generations.
