U.S. Capitol Police officers arrested an 18-year-old man Tuesday after he ran toward the U.S. Capitol carrying a loaded shotgun, United States Capitol Police (USCP) said in a statement. No one was injured.
The arrest happened shortly after noon on Tuesday, Feb. 17, on the Lower West Terrace, police said. Officers reported the suspect also had multiple rounds of ammunition and a tactical-style vest. Investigators later located the suspect’s SUV parked in front of the U.S. Botanic Garden on Maryland Avenue SW, where a gas mask and helmet were visible inside the vehicle, police said.
U.S. Capitol Police identified the suspect as Carter Camacho, 18, of Smyrna, Georgia. He was arrested on charges of Unlawful Activities, Carrying a Rifle without a License, Unregistered Firearm, and Unregistered Ammunition, the agency said.
“Just last summer, we held an active threat exercise on the West Front of the U.S. Capitol – in the very location where today’s officers stopped the suspect,” U.S. Capitol Police Chief Michael Sullivan said, according to USCP. Sullivan said the exercises are now held monthly across different areas of the Capitol Complex to keep officers prepared for potential threats.
The agency’s Threat Assessment Section is investigating to determine a motive. USCP said the suspect was not previously on file with the department.
