Pilot Reports Possible Burns After Laptop Fire on American Flight

An American Airlines pilot reported that four to five passengers may have suffered burns in a laptop battery fire that took place on a flight approaching Dallas Fort Worth International Airport on Friday.

In a statement provided to People, the FAA said Flight 2398 landed safely at about 6:55 p.m. local time Aug. 21. Flight attendants contained the reported laptop-battery fire with a thermal containment bag.

American Airlines described the incident as smoke from a customer’s device during landing. The Airbus A321 originated in Atlanta and carried 133 people.

CBS News obtained air-traffic-control audio in which the pilot reported a cabin fire near the back of the aircraft as flight attendants worked to extinguish it. The pilot later estimated that four to five passengers had suffered burns. He said the laptop had been contained near the middle of the aircraft.

After the pilot requested medical assistance, emergency personnel met the aircraft at the gate. The plane taxied there under its own power.

DFW Airport said one passenger was treated at the scene and released. The pilot’s preliminary injury estimate has not been independently confirmed.

The FAA is investigating.
