Air India has confirmed that Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an accident shortly after take-off on Thursday.
According to an official statement posted on Air India’s official X account, the flight departed at 1338 hours local time and was carrying a total of 242 passengers and crew members onboard a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Air India provided a nationality breakdown of the people onboard: 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian national, and seven Portuguese nationals.
According to the airline, injured passengers are currently being transported to the nearest hospitals. The nature and severity of the accident, along with the number of injured, have not yet been disclosed.
Authorities in Ahmedabad, as well as aviation safety agencies, are expected to conduct a full investigation into the incident.
