MAKUENI, Kenya — A bus and a lorry collided head-on early Sunday on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, killing at least 22 people, according to Capital FM.
The crash happened around 7 a.m. at Kanga, past Mtito Andei in Makueni County. The first count put the dead at 20. Two more people later died from their injuries.
Makueni County Commissioner Abdullahi Khalif confirmed the deaths. Several other passengers were hurt, and Khalif said the toll could still rise, The Associated Press reported.
People on the bus were coming back from a burial ceremony. Crews took the injured to Mtito Andei Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr. sent condolences to the families.
“A fatal road traffic accident at Mtito Andei, on Mombasa Road. Over 20 fatalities. The survivors are receiving attention at Makindu Hospital. Our condolences to the families of the deceased,”
No cause has been established. Police have not said what led to the collision.
The stretch where the bus and lorry met is not new to this kind of loss. Kenya’s National Transport and Safety Authority has designated that section of the highway an “accident black spot” and says recommendations were made to address safety concerns there, according to The Associated Press.
Three weeks ago, on Oct. 3, another crash on the same highway killed 17 people. That collision, near Salama in Makueni County, involved several vehicles.
