Shah Uses Dashain Message to Urge Fight Against Corruption

The prime minister said Dashain's tika and jamara tradition inspires people to triumph over evil

KATHMANDU — Corruption, poor governance, bureaucratic delays, inequality and political disorder all need to be rooted out, Prime Minister Balendra Shah said in his Vijaya Dashami greeting on Wednesday, calling on Nepalis to work together to do it.

For many, he said, the festival is also the one time they see friends and relatives again after years apart, and old bonds are renewed.

“We must unite to eliminate these ills and ensure that every citizen feels that the government is there for them. Honest efforts, determination and collective hard work will help us overcome these problems. To bring about change, we must change not only our thinking but also our behaviour,”

— Prime Minister Balendra Shah, in his Vijaya Dashami message posted in Facebook

He wished all Nepalis, in the country and abroad, happiness, peace, prosperity and further progress.

Vijaya Dashami’s blessings, received from elders with tika and jamara, are meant to inspire people to defeat evil and do good, he said.

Shah asked people not to spend beyond their means on the festival. Goodwill, unity, respect and love should be shared, he said, and ego, greed, jealousy, violence and discrimination set aside.
