Kenya Reports Eighth Ebola Case, Health Director Says

The latest patient is a 49-year-old attendant; officials continue testing and quarantine measures.

NAIROBI, Kenya — Kenya’s Ebola cases rose to eight Sunday after a 49-year-old patient attendant tested positive, Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said.

Amoth told Citizen TV that 38 people were tested Sunday. The new patient developed fever, headache and muscle pain and has been isolated, the broadcaster’s Citizen Digital service reported.

He said people in quarantine had developed symptoms after isolation, making earlier transmission in the community unlikely. Virginia Times has not independently verified that assessment.

The Associated Press reported that 128 contacts remained in quarantine and six other patients were stable after supportive care.

The new case follows four infections announced Saturday involving three health workers and a close male relative of the first patient, according to Citizen Digital.

Kenya’s first patient arrived from Congo on Oct. 3 and died at Nairobi Hospital on Oct. 5, AP reported.
