Egypt Pledges All Necessary Support to Saudi Arabia

National Defense Council, chaired by President El-Sisi, decided Cairo will give the kingdom all necessary and possible support

CAIRO — Egypt will give Saudi Arabia all necessary and possible support to defend its security and stability, the presidency said Sunday, after President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi chaired a meeting of the National Defense Council at the Presidential Palace.

The council reviewed the current regional developments, especially what the presidency called the serious developments in the region and the escalating, unacceptable attacks that Saudi Arabia is facing, the presidency spokesperson said.

The council declared full solidarity with Saudi Arabia, based on the historical and long-standing relations between the peoples of the two countries. Saudi national security, it said, is connected with Egyptian and Arab national security.

“Providing all necessary and possible forms of support to the sisterly Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to defend its security and stability, preserve its capabilities, and ensure the safety of its lands and Islamic holy sites.”

The council also decided to step up political and diplomatic efforts with the regional and international parties concerned, aimed at de-escalating the situation in the region and resolving its current crises peacefully.

The meeting was attended by the speaker of the House of Representatives, the prime minister, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and minister of defense and military production, and the chief of staff of the Armed Forces. The ministers of interior, finance, and foreign affairs and international cooperation and Egyptians abroad were also there, along with the head of General Intelligence. Also at the table were the leaders of the main branches of the Armed Forces, the heads of the Operations Authority and the Military Intelligence Authority, and the council’s secretary-general.

Hours earlier, the Saudi-led coalition said Saudi air defences had intercepted missiles and drones launched by Yemen’s Houthi militia.
