Mexico Expands Trudy Warnings as Hurricane Nears Pacific Coast

New tropical storm warning covers Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita; hurricane warnings remain farther south.

MIAMI — Mexico extended tropical storm warnings to Punta Mita on Saturday as Hurricane Trudy drew closer to its Pacific coast, the National Hurricane Center said.

The new warning runs from Cabo Corrientes to Punta Mita. A hurricane warning still covers Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes. The center urged people there to complete preparations.

Trudy was about 215 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo at 5 a.m. EDT. Its winds held at 90 mph as it moved northwest at 8 mph.

The center is expected to pass near the coast Saturday night into Sunday. Some strengthening is still possible Saturday, but weakening is forecast to begin by Sunday.

Forecasters expect tropical storm conditions in the hurricane warning area during the day and hurricane conditions by night.

The advisory forecasts 4 to 8 inches through the weekend in Michoacán, Colima and Jalisco. Some places could get around 15 inches. The agency warned of life-threatening floods and mudslides, particularly on steep terrain.

Along the coast, storm surge could bring flooding and large, destructive waves. The hurricane center warned that Trudy’s swells would cause life-threatening surf and rip currents.
