BEND, Ore. — Three children and one adult were killed Thursday in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, according to reports by CNN and CBS News citing sources, Reuters reported.
The suspected shooter was also dead. Bend police spokesperson Sheila Miller said officers did not yet know who shot the suspect, and that it may have been a bystander.
Police got the first call at about 12:59 p.m. local time. Someone had fired into a car near the school. A minute later, callers said a person had entered the school and started shooting. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m., and the suspect was reported dead inside the school seconds later.
Miller said there were multiple victims, and children were among them. At least two people were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not known.
The school went into lockdown. Officers cleared the building room by room and moved students out, Miller said.
Families were told to go to a reunification site at Journey Church, on South Highway 97 in Bend.
The school serves students in kindergarten through fifth grade. About 459 students were enrolled last year, according to state education figures cited in reporting by The Associated Press.
FBI Director Kash Patel said the FBI’s Portland office was at the scene and helping local police. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said she was monitoring the situation and thanked first responders who were at the school.
Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook said the district was heartbroken. Its first job, he said, was caring for students and staff and helping police and emergency crews. The school will be closed Friday, officials said.
Police have not released the suspect’s name or a motive. The number of people injured was still unclear Thursday evening.
