RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — An attack on King Khalid International Airport on Saturday, Oct. 10, killed 12 people and injured 309, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation reported.
Some of the wounded were in critical condition. According to a follow-up statement published by the Saudi Press Agency, all those injured were receiving medical care at several hospitals.
Four Saudi citizens were among the dead. The other eight were residents: two Bangladeshis and one each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine and Sudan.
GACA also reported property damage, with the extent still being assessed. Virginia Times has not independently verified the casualty figures.
The statement was published at 1:11 a.m. Saudi time Sunday, Oct. 11 — 22:11 GMT Saturday. It did not name the victims, identify those responsible or describe how the attack was carried out.
In its earlier announcement, GACA reported that airport operations had been temporarily suspended while officials assessed damage and checked the safety of its facilities.
The airport had also come under attack Thursday, Oct. 8. A separate Saudi Press Agency statement reported two attacks that day, targeting airport facilities and a Saudia aircraft. Three Saudi citizens were killed, and citizens and residents of several nationalities were injured.
Operations resumed after Thursday’s attacks, according to that statement. Arab News attributed the earlier strikes to Yemen’s Houthi militants. GACA’s follow-up statement did not attribute responsibility for Saturday’s attack.
