Trump Approval Falls to 33% in FT/Focaldata Poll

Economic, trade and midterm findings accompany the lowest approval result in the FT series.

A Financial Times poll conducted by Focaldata found 33% of registered voters approved of President Donald Trump’s job performance, the lowest in the FT series since it began asking in May.

Approval was 33.45%, down nearly three points from 36.22% in August. FT reported 72% approval among Republican voters, another low in its series.

Among registered voters, 66.4% believed the economy was heading in the wrong direction, and 57.3% felt worse off financially since Donald Trump became president. Note that the latter question didn’t ask whether Trump’s policies were responsible for the state of finances.

On trade, 60.5% of the respondents disapproved of the way Trump was dealing with the situation, and 56.1% were against imposing tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. The survey didn’t ask whether consumer price concerns were behind their opposition.

Another 45.7% said Trump was making it harder for Republican congressional candidates to win in November. Among all registered voters, 42.8% said his endorsement would make them less likely to support a candidate. FT separately reported 47% among independents.

FT reported an online survey of 1,914 registered voters from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1, with a 2.6-point margin of error. Focaldata’s workbook gives Sept. 2 as the end date and conflicting adult samples of 2,178 and 2,180.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
