Dutch Central Bank Shifts 86 Metric Tons of Gold to London

DNB says the reallocation improves tradability and access to reserves during a crisis.

De Nederlandsche Bank, the Netherlands’ central bank, transferred approximately 86 metric tons of gold from New York and Ottawa to London, the bank announced Sept. 2.

The reallocation took place between March and August 2026 and involved part of the approximately 313 metric tons stored in the United States and Canada.

According to the central bank, the move was driven by growing geopolitical instability and improved the liquidity and tradability of the gold as well as crisis preparedness. Gold held at the Bank of England must meet modern international trading standards and is more readily usable during a crisis, the bank said.

DNB carried out most of the shift by selling approximately 59 tons in New York and buying standards-compliant gold in London.

The bank also physically moved more than 27 tons from the United States and Canada to its Cash Centre in Zeist. A similar amount of qualifying gold was transferred from Zeist to London, avoiding the need to remelt bars.

Total reserves of DNB still remained the same and are equal to 612.4 tons worth €72.2 billion at the year-end of 2025. London received the portion from 18.1% to 32.1%, while New York and Ottawa both own 18.5% each.

This is a developing story. Virginia Times will update as information becomes available.
