A 12-inch gas line was secured Wednesday after a car hit the pipe near Ox Road and Burke Center Parkway, resulting in evacuation of some people and closing of both directions of the road.
The single-car crash took place at 10:55 a.m., Fairfax County Fire and Rescue revealed. The driver was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Fire officials Reported that there was a strong odor of gas in the area, which forced a nearby elementary school, shopping complex, daycare center, church and animal hospital to be evacuated.
Crews secured the line shortly before 1:30 p.m. In a later update, Fire and Rescue said Ox Road remained closed.
The Fairfax County Police Department described the location as Fairfax Station and warned drivers to expect extended delays while crews worked to repair the pipeline. Fire and Rescue identified it as Fairview.
Authorities did not say when Ox Road would reopen or provide further details about how the crash occurred.
