President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he used a different aircraft after leaving Turkey last month because the Secret Service and military advised the change amid a possible threat.
Answering a reporter’s question in remarks shared by White House Rapid Response, Trump said security officials wanted him on “a different flight, a different plane.” He said he followed their instructions.
Asked about the threat, Trump said, “I guess there was a threat out there.” He said he did not seek further details because he receives many threats.
The Washington Post first reported that a credible threat from Iran prompted the aircraft change after a NATO summit. Trump confirmed the switch and said there may have been a threat, but he did not directly identify Iran as its source or call it credible.
Trump said the alternate plane offered equal safety. He said the aircraft he boarded may have faced greater danger because it might have been the likelier target.
The president said the incident did not frighten him. Asked separately whether he trusted Iran, Trump replied, “I don’t trust Iran.”
