Drone Attack Kills 13 in Russia’s Nizhnekamsk, Officials Say

A Ukrainian drone attack killed at least 13 people, including a child, Monday in Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s Republic of Tatarstan, Mayor Radmir Belyayev said.

Officials initially reported 12 deaths and 39 injuries before raising the death toll.

The Tatarstan government later put the number of injured at 48. It said 75 people sought medical care and 21 were hospitalized.

Belyayev said drones struck industrial facilities and residential areas during the large-scale attack.

Russia’s Investigative Committee opened a terrorism case. It alleged that Ukrainian forces struck industrial and civilian sites.

Ukraine’s General Staff said its forces hit the TANECO oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk and recorded a fire at the facility. It did not say civilian areas were targeted or address the reported casualties.

Reuters verified videos showing smoke rising from the refinery. The casualty figures and reported damage to civilian areas could not be independently confirmed.

Tatarstan head Rustam Minnikhanov declared a period of mourning.
