President Donald Trump said Saturday he canceled a planned U.S. attack on Iran as negotiators pursue terms for the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear program.
Trump said in a Truth Social post that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries asked Washington to wait because the deal’s “perimeters” had been agreed. He said any agreement must reopen the strait and end Iran’s nuclear threat.
Trump said his decision depended on a quick deal and that Israel had joined the commitment. The post provided no independent evidence that Tehran requested a delay or accepted his terms.
Reuters reported that unnamed Iranian military sources cited by Mehr News called Trump’s claim “a new lie.” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister, warned that hostile U.S. action would draw a decisive response.
Media reports conflicted on whether Trump authorized strikes. The Wall Street Journal cited U.S. officials saying Trump ordered strikes, while CBS News and Axios reported that he had not issued final orders.
The U.S. Embassy in Jordan and other missions issued security alerts. They urged Americans to consider departing, citing the potential for unforeseen escalation. The Saudi Press Agency and Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry reported calls for dialogue and de-escalation.
