President Donald Trump said imported generic drugs will remain tariff-free for two years beginning Aug. 1, then face a 100% duty for one year and 200% after that.
Trump announced the schedule Tuesday in a post on Truth Social. He said the tariffs would apply to all generic drugs brought into the United States.
Trump wrote that the aim is to “RESHORE Generic Pharmaceutical Production into America,” and that companies that decide not to build plants and equipment within the stated period would face a penalty.

He said the policy is intended to protect people in the United States.
The policy on patented, branded and innovative drugs will remain as it is, Trump said. He described that approach as successful.
Trump also said pharmaceutical facilities are being built across the United States “at a level never seen before.” He did not name specific projects or provide supporting figures in the post.
The post named no country or company. It did not say which agency will administer the tariffs or whether companies that begin construction during the two-year window qualify for relief.
