Kane Says Falling Short of Another Final Is Hard to Take

Captain thanks fans and vows England will regroup after 2-1 semifinal defeat to Argentina in Atlanta

England captain Harry Kane said Thursday that falling short of another final is “hard to take,” writing that the team gave everything over the last seven weeks.

Kane posted the statement on Facebook a day after England’s semifinal defeat.

We were close, really close to another final but it wasn’t enough — Harry Kane

He said England has been contending for eight years and is still missing the final piece.

Kane said the squad must step back, process the defeat and find a way to improve. He praised his teammates for overcoming tough games and difficult environments during the tournament.

The captain said the run produced memories that will stay with players and fans for a long time. Chasing glory, he wrote, means fighting for it, getting knocked down and going again.

Kane thanked fans who traveled to the stadiums, supporters back home, and the players and staff.

“Win or lose, we learn and go again,” he wrote.

The statement came after Argentina defeated England 2-1 in a semifinal played Wednesday in Atlanta.
