Biden Marks America’s 250th Birthday With Call to Defend Democracy

Former president says democracy must be earned by every generation as the nation turns 250

Former President Joe Biden marked the United States’ 250th Independence Day on Saturday with a statement urging Americans to keep defending democracy, calling the nation’s founding promise unfinished.

In a message posted on X, Biden said the signers of the Declaration of Independence made a promise no nation had made before — that all people are created equal, with rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Biden described America as the only nation built on an idea rather than ethnicity, blood or geography. He said every generation has had to choose that idea again, pointing to Valley Forge, Gettysburg, Normandy and Selma.

Democracy comes with no guarantees, Biden said, and Americans must fight for it year after year. He called that duty the meaning of being American, not a burden.

Our story isn’t finished. — Former President Joe Biden

He acknowledged the country has not fully lived up to the Declaration’s words but said Americans have never abandoned them. Biden said he does not believe Americans are as divided as they are told, and closed by saying “our story isn’t finished.”
