President Donald Trump said former FBI Director James Comey’s “8647” Instagram post meant “kill President Trump,” after federal prosecutors brought a new criminal case tied to a photo of seashells arranged on a beach.
Comey was indicted in North Carolina on charges of making threats against the president and transmitting a threat in interstate commerce, according to the Justice Department. The case centers on an Instagram photo Comey posted showing seashells arranged to read “86 47.”
Prosecutors allege the numbers amounted to a threat against Trump, who is the 47th president. Comey has said he believed the numbers were a political message, not a call for violence, and removed the post after seeing that some people were interpreting it that way, AP reported.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote that “86” is “a mob term” meaning “kill him” and said “86 47 means ‘kill President Trump.’” Trump also called Comey a “Dirty Cop” and wrote, “EIGHT MILES OUT, SIX FEET DOWN!”
The indictment is tied to an Instagram photo Comey posted in May 2025 showing the “8647” shell formation on a beach. The Justice Department’s case argues the post should be treated as a threat, while Comey’s defense is expected to challenge that claim.
The indictment is the second criminal case brought against Comey by the Justice Department under President Donald Trump. Comey has long been a target of Trump’s public criticism.
Comey was charged in September with making a false statement and obstructing Congress. A federal judge later dismissed the case after finding that the prosecutor who secured the indictment was not lawfully appointed.
