Russia Condemns Strike Near Iran’s Bushehr Nuclear Plant, Demands Action From IAEA and UN

Moscow says the strike near Bushehr put workers at risk and raised the danger of serious humanitarian and environmental consequences.

On Monday, Russia condemned what it called a reckless attack that happened near Unit 1 of Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant on March 24. It warned that any attack on the plant might have devastating effects on people and the environment.

In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said it was “deeply outraged” by what it described as a reckless and irresponsible strike in the immediate vicinity of the plant. The ministry said the incident came a day after U.S. President Donald Trump had given what it called unsubstantiated assurances that he had ordered a five-day pause in attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure on March 23.

The ministry said the strike seemed to suggest that the people behind the attack were determined to put the region at risk of a nuclear catastrophe on a huge scale. It further alleged that earlier bombing had already killed civilians in Iran.

The statement says that workers at the Bushehr plant, including Russian experts, are always in danger. The government added that so far, catastrophe had only been avoided by chance and that attacks were getting closer and closer to the working power unit.

Russia told the US and Israel to stop what it called aggression against Iran, such as attacks on nuclear power plants and installations nearby that are protected by International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards.

The ministry also asked the IAEA, the UN, and its leaders to take unambiguous steps to stop any more attacks near the site.
