Qatar says six dead after helicopter crashes in territorial waters, search continues for pilot

Qatar’s defense ministry said the helicopter went down early Sunday in territorial waters, killing six people and leaving one pilot missing.

The Qatar Ministry of Defense said Sunday that six people were confirmed dead after a helicopter carrying personnel crashed early Sunday in the country’s territorial waters.

The ministry said the dead included Captain Mubarak Salem Daway Al-Marri, Sergeant Fahad Hadi Ghanem Al-Khayarin, and Corporal Mohammed Maher Mohammed of the Qatar Armed Forces. It said Major Sinan Taştekin of the Qatar-Turkey Joint Forces was also among those killed.

The statement also said that two Turkish civilians who were on the helicopter, Suleiman Cemra Kahraman and Ismail Anas Can, were also confirmed dead.

Search and rescue operations were continuing for Captain Saeed Nasser Samekh of the Qatar Armed Forces, the Ministry said.

The ministry said the helicopter went down at dawn Sunday in the state’s territorial waters. It did not provide a cause of the crash or say how many people were on board.
