Tim Walz Says Kristi Noem May Face More Questions in Minnesota After DHS Exit

Walz says accountability remains a central issue in Minnesota after Noem’s exit from DHS.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said that the former Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, may face more investigation in the state of Minnesota after President Donald Trump removed her from the position. Trump announced the removal of the former secretary on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

In an interview with Jen Psaki, the Minnesota Governor criticized the former Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem. Walz said, “I would just say at this time that former Secretary Noem should probably get used to spending more time in Minnesota because I have a pretty good feeling in the future she may be doing that because we have got to get accountability.”

Walz also criticized the decision made by President Donald Trump to appoint Markwayne Mullin, the senator, as the new head of the Homeland Security Department. Walz said that he had little confidence that the decision made by the President would improve the situation. He also said that he believed that the new head of the Homeland Security Department would still use the same measures of enforcing immigration. Walz said that the new head of the Homeland Security Department, Markwayne Mullin, is closely aligned with the President.

The issue began with the dispute between the state of Minnesota and the Homeland Security Department over the immigration surge. Two US citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti, were shot dead by the agents of the Homeland Security Department in the state of Minnesota. Both shootings occurred in January 2026 during Operation Metro Surge in Minneapolis. Renee Good was killed early in the month, and Alex Pretti was killed later in the same month.

The Minnesota Attorney General’s Office had sued the Homeland Security Department in January, saying that the federal operation was unlawful. Later, Attorney General Keith Ellison, along with the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, won the court order to prevent the destruction of evidence related to the shooting of Pretti. That is the reason why the Minnesota Governor’s comments have significance at the time the former Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, was removed from the position.
