Retired FBI Agent Claims “Porch Guy” Used Walkie-Talkie in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance

Former agent suggests coordinated communication may explain limited digital evidence.

A retired FBI agent says a suspect identified in surveillance images related to the disappearance of an 84-year-old woman might have used a walkie-talkie to communicate with accomplices, which she says could explain why geofencing efforts have yielded few leads.

Jennifer Coffindaffer said in a post Monday on X that walkie-talkies are “untraceable” and might have helped the suspect evade authorities.

In a previous X post dated Feb. 25, Coffindaffer said she thinks the suspect, dubbed “porch guy,” “definitely had an accomplice,” citing what she said was an antenna and a hand-held device. In that post, Coffindaffer said the suspect’s abduction of the missing woman would have been difficult to accomplish without an accomplice.

Coffindaffer said in a Newsweek interview that she saw a square-shaped object and an antenna protruding from the pants pocket of the suspect and that this “bolstered” her belief that more than one person might have been involved.

Nancy Guthrie, the mother of “Today” show anchor Savannah Guthrie, was last seen at her home in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson, Arizona, Jan. 31 and has been missing more than a month.

The FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department released surveillance images and video of a suspect and said they worked with private sector partners to recover images and video that might have been lost, corrupted, or inaccessible, such as if a recording device was removed.

There is a private reward of $1 million for information that directly leads to her safe return. The FBI’s reward of $100,000 is still active. Anyone with firsthand, fact-based information is asked to contact the FBI’s tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324).
