The Democrats flipped a seat in Texas this weekend as Taylor Rehmet secured the special election in the Texas Senate District 9 race, garnering about 57% of the vote.
Taylor Rehmet , the union leader and former Air Force vet outdistanced Republican Leigh Wambsganss in the special election in the Fort Worth area district.
President Donald Trump entered the race in the final days of the campaign with three posts on social media in the last 48 hours to support Wambsganss’ candidacy. Wambsganss also had a significant fundraising advantage in the final days of the campaign, with Dan Patrick helping to raise funds on her behalf.
According to Tarrant County’s cumulative totals released by the county’s elections office, Taylor Rehmet garnered 54,280 votes, or 57.21% of total votes cast in the runoff race, while her opponent, Republican Leigh Wambsganss, received 40,600 votes, or 42.79% of total votes cast.
The total number of votes counted in the runoff race was 94,880 votes.
The seat opened last summer when Republican Kelly Hancock stepped down to become the state’s acting comptroller. Rehmet will serve the remaining 11 months of Hancock’s term
Republicans have held the seat for decades, and President Donald Trump carried the district by 17 points in 2024, as reported by AP News.
The latest results released by Tarrant County’s elections office came in a cumulative elections update report released by the office. However, it bears noting that no results released by any elections office indicate that they are final. Instead, they are subject to change as canvassing and certification of results proceed.
The runoff race was to determine the winner of the Texas Senate race in District 9, which covers portions of North Texas and Tarrant County. In elections involving legislative or senate seats, runoff elections are held to determine the winner among those running in a race where no one garnered a certain number of votes or percentage of total votes cast in the primary or earlier elections.
Rehmet and Wambsganss ran in the earlier race for the same senate seat in District 9. Rehmet now appears to have won by a margin of 13,680 votes in the district portion of the cumulative report released by Tarrant County’s elections office.
