Nepal court orders Rabi Lamichhane’s release on Rs 26.8 million bail

Nepal’s High Court Butwal set bail, extra guarantees, and travel conditions for RSP chair Rabi Lamichhane’s release from custody.

KATHMANDU, Nepal — A Nepalese high court has ordered the release of Rastriya Swatantra Party Chair Rabi Lamichhane from custody if he submits a bank guarantee covering bail and additional financial conditions.

The Butwal bench of the High Court directed authorities to free Lamichhane after he posts bail of Rs 26.8 million (2 crore 68 lakh) and provides an additional Rs 10 million (1 crore) guarantee, Onlinekhabar reported.

The order was issued after a hearing before a joint bench of Judges Basudev Acharya and Tejnarayan Poudel. Lamichhane had petitioned the court to allow him to remain out of detention after depositing the amount tied to the alleged loss, Onlinekhabar reported.

The high court set three conditions for release. First, Lamichhane must inform the court in advance and obtain permission before any foreign travel. Second, he must sign a written commitment to pay any additional loss amount or fines that may be ordered in a final verdict. Third, the court said the required amounts must be presented through a bank guarantee tied to the bail and possible loss-sharing figure set by the district court.

Once the bank guarantee is verified and submitted as ordered, the district court will move forward with the process to release Lamichhane.
