Monarchist Campaigner Durga Prasai Arrested in Bhaktapur Ahead of New Protest Drive

Police detain the monarchist businessman days before he vowed to escalate street protests.

VT Staff/ Kathmandu: Medical entrepreneur and monarchist activist Durga Prasai has been arrested from his home in Bhaktapur ahead of a fresh protest campaign he had vowed to launch this month, police said.

A joint team from the Kathmandu District Police Range and the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office detained Prasai at his residence around midnight Monday and took him to the District Police Complex in Kathmandu, according to Online Khabar.

Police have accused Prasai of making statements that could incite violence and spur anarchic activities. Authorities say he has been under watch for using increasingly aggressive language in public rallies and social media broadcasts.

Prasai, who presents himself as coordinator of a campaign to “protect the nation, nationalism, religion and culture,” had publicly announced plans to intensify agitation from Mangsir 7 under that banner. He and his allies have been getting ready for protests that would ask for things like bank loan forgiveness and other economic concessions.

Online Khabar reported that the vocal royalist had been arrested before for a violent protest on Chaitra 15 and then released by a court order. His most recent arrest comes as security forces make it clear that they will be less tolerant of calls for street protests that they think will disrupt public order.
