Deadly Blast at Srinagar Police Station Kills 6, Injures 27 During Explosives Handling

Six killed and 27 injured after seized explosives detonated during forensic sampling at Nowgam police station on the outskirts of Srinagar, officials say.

An accidental blast at a police station on the outskirts of Srinagar killed six people and injured 27 others while officers were handling seized explosives linked to a terror case, according to Press Trust of India.

The explosion occurred late Friday night at the Nowgam police station, where personnel were extracting samples from a large cache of explosive material recently recovered in connection with what officials have described as a “white-collar” terror module.

Officials said the blast tore through the section of the facility where the explosives from Haryana’s Faridabad had been brought for examination. Most of the victims were policemen and forensic staff who were present during the sampling process, reported Press Trust of India.

Emergency teams rushed the injured to nearby hospitals as security was tightened around the station and surrounding areas. Authorities have not immediately shared further details on the condition of those wounded or whether any civilians were among the casualties.

The explosives had been transported to Srinagar as part of an ongoing investigation into the alleged module, which officials say involved operatives using non-traditional or low-profile methods to support terror activity. How the material detonated during handling is now a key focus of the inquiry, cited by Press Trust of India.

Senior police and forensic officers are assessing the scene to determine whether safety protocols were followed and what triggered the fatal blast.
