Trump Blames Democrats for Shutdown, Calls ACA Subsidies a ‘Windfall’ for Insurers

In a Sunday Truth Social post, Trump criticized ACA subsidies and urged a path to talks after reopening.

President Donald Trump on Sunday criticized Democrats over the federal government shutdown and denounced Affordable Care Act subsidy payments as an enrichment of health insurers.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Americans are “being terrorized by Democrats who have decided to shut the Government down”  to force co ntinuation of “ObamaCare subsidies.” He said that the payments have been a “DISASTER  for the American People”  and that they have helped big insurance firms, saying that the stock prices of some companies have gone up “over 1000%” since the law went into effect. He also said premiums “have more than DOUBLED,”  contrary to former President Barack Obama’s assurances.

Trump said he supports directing money “to THE PEOPLE  to purchase better Healthcare,  and create competition,” adding that “this enrichment of Health Insurance  companies must stop.” He wrote that it is “long past time to lower Premiums,  not enrich Insurance Companies.”

The former president said he is ready to negotiate across party lines “once the Government  is open,” urging Democrats to “stop pushing failed policies.”

The post arrived as the shutdown continues and partisan talks over federal spending and health policy remain unresolved, Truth Social said.
