Election Day in NYC: Trump backs Cuomo, warns funding cuts as Mamdani leads

Global attention on NYC vote as Mamdani leads and Trump’s funding warning raises the stakes.

Election Day in New York City. New Yorkers are heading to the polls, with Andrew Cuomo and Zohran Mamdani the top competitors in the mayoral race. Beyond the United States, the world is watching the results. Mamdani is leading Cuomo in recent polls.

U.S. President Donald Trump urged New Yorkers to back former Gov. Andrew Cuomo for mayor on the eve of the election and warned he could limit federal support for the city if Democrat Zohran Mamdani prevails. Trump made the appeal and threat in a post on Truth Social.

Trump said he would provide only the “minimum” required by law should Mamdani take City Hall, arguing the progressive candidate would be disastrous for New York. He also told supporters not to split the anti-Mamdani vote by backing Republican Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani brushed off the intervention, saying the endorsement shows Cuomo is aligned with Trump’s interests. “They share the same donors, the same small vision, the same sense of impunity,” he said at a campaign event, according to Reuters.

The New York State Comptroller says that the state’s proposed FY 2026 plan relies on about $7.4 billion in federal funds, which is about 6.4% of all spending.

Sen. Bernie Sanders amplified Mamdani’s populist pitch, writing on X that the candidate has taken on “the oligarchs, Trump, the Republican establishment and the Democratic establishment.”

What’s next: Polls close tonight in a race that has scrambled party lines, with Cuomo running as an independent and Mamdani leading late surveys, reported by Reuters.
