Spain–Sweden, Germany–France: Women’s Nations League Semifinals Kick Off

Spain vs Sweden and Germany vs France open a two-leg semifinal slate; return legs Tuesday, Oct. 28; final Nov. 28 and third-place Dec. 2.

Spain titleholders host Sweden and Germany extend their battle against France as the UEFA Women’s Nations League semifinals kick off Friday, with match-ups on Tuesday, Oct. 28, according to UEFA. Final and third-place play-off are set for November 28 and December 2.

Germany travel to their tie against France in front of a large home audience for the first leg and with captain Giulia Gwinn back in the squad, reports UEFA. Lena Oberdorf (ACL) and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger are the players absent due to injury, while uncapped trio Laura Dick, Camilla Küver and Shekiera Martinez come in. Both matches are a great challenge,” Germany coach Christian Wück said, as reported by UEFA, and added that injuries have opened the door to new players. France coach Laurent Bonadei has drawn on youth, recalling eight under 23 following international retirements from midfielders Sandie Toletti and Amel Majri. “If they’re here, it’s because I believe they have the level,” Bonadei said, as reported by UEFA.

Spain are captained by new boss Sonia Bermúdez, who has taken over from Montse Tomé, UEFA reports. There is a call-up for Mapi León and record goal-scorer Jenni Hermoso; Patri Guijarro is out injured and not included, with Clara Serrajordi one of three uncapped returns. “I like the pressure and I like making my debut in a semi-final,” UEFA quotes Bermúdez.

Sweden also include a new manager, Tony Gustavsson, who has recalled veterans Linda Sembrant and Kosovare Asllani and brought on-rising talents, although defender Magdalena Eriksson has withdrawn. “This team has been selected precisely to face an attacking and gifted Spain,” Gustavsson said, citing UEFA.

Germany beat France on penalties in the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 quarterfinals, and Spain followed their 2023 FIFA World Cup success by taking the first Nations League, according to UEFA.

The semifinals continue Tuesday, October 28, with aggregate winners to proceed to the November 28 final; further updates to follow from UEFA.
