Bollywood Actor-director and comedian Govardhan “Asrani” died in Mumbai on Monday at the age of 84 after a prolonged illness, with last rites performed at Santacruz Crematorium, according to ANI.
Asrani’s manager, Babubhai Thiba, said the actor “passed away today at 3 PM at Arogya Nidhi Hospital, Juhu,” and is survived by his wife, sister, and nephew, reported the Hindustan Times.
He had been hospitalized with difficulty breathing in the past few days, doctors reporting fluid in the lungs, according to reports.
His Instagram account posted a Diwali wish in an Instagram Story just hours before the news broke, a post that went viral after his death.
In a career that lasted five decades and more than 300 films, Asrani went on to be one of the most popular comic actors in Hindi cinema. His performance as the demented jailer in “Sholay” (1975) is an Indian pop culture legend.
