President Donald Trump called for an instant halt to fighting in Ukraine Friday, saying both sides should “stop where they are” and let “history decide,” in a post on Truth Social.
Trump said his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was “interesting and cordial” and continued on to say that he has already made the same message to Russia’s Vladimir Putin. “Enough blood has been shed,” he wrote, requesting an end to “unsustainable sums of money” into the war. No more shooting, no more death,” he further added, as reported by Truth Social.
The remark came after Zelenskyy’s trip to Washington, where the two leaders met to discuss Ukraine’s defense requirements and long-range strike capacity. Trump has recently indicated reluctance to sign off on certain systems while pushing for a negotiated settlement of the war, as per ABC News.
Trump and Putin are set for another sit-down focused on the war, provisionally in Budapest, at the mercy of diplomatic preparation by their foreign ministers. On Thursday, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has promoted his country as host, with an emphasis on a “pro-peace” positioning.
Ukraine has maintained that whatever negotiation takes place, it must address Russia’s occupation of its territory and ongoing bombings, positions Ze lenskyy has repeated in the last few days. Russia, on the other hand, has accused Kyiv of refusing reasonable terms while declaring it open to negotiation, as evident in recent briefings covered by Reuters.
Trump’s post did not include next steps, timelines, or deal conditions. There are no new deal announcements by the White House and Kyiv based on Friday’s negotiations.
