The Israeli military reported carrying out more than 170 airstrikes across the Gaza Strip in the past day, as troops continued ground operations in Gaza City and other areas.
In a statement, the army said its 162nd Division was engaged in intense fighting deep within Gaza City, the Times of Israel reports. Forces targeted several ambush sites used against Israeli troops, along with weapons storage facilities.
The military also detailed actions by its 98th and 36th divisions in Gaza City, while the 99th Division in the north dismantled above-ground and underground infrastructure. Troops discovered and destroyed an ambush post rigged with explosives.
The army said its warplanes targeted Palestinian fighters along with “military structures, weapons depots and other sites” across the enclave during the past day. It also reported finding and destroying an ambush post containing explosives in the north. These claims could not be independently verified as the war is ongoing.
The hostilities follow Hamas’s Oct. 7, 2023, assault on southern Israel and Israel’s subsequent air and ground operations in Gaza. Palestinian fatalities in Gaza have reached 65,419 and injuries 167,160 since Oct. 7, according to figures from Gaza’s Ministry of Health compiled by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. Humanitarian agencies, including the World Health Organization, warn that displacement, hunger and disease remain acute across the territory.
Israel claims it wants to get rid of Hamas’s military power and free the last hostages. The military often puts out summaries of strikes and unit movements. The number of casualties on either side is often different and changes as assessments vary. As operations spread to areas with a lot of people, officials and relief groups keep pushing for steps to keep civilians safe.
