Trump shifts on Ukraine after Zelenskyy meeting, says Kyiv can win back all territory

After a UNGA meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump signals a shift and says Kyiv can retake all territory with EU and NATO support.

President Donald Trump said Ukraine is now “in a position to fight and win all of Ukraine back,” reversing earlier pressure on Kyiv to consider territorial concessions to end the war with Russia.

He made the claim in a post on Truth Social after meeting for about an hour with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly.

Trump framed the path to victory as dependent on Europe, saying sustained support from the European Union and NATO could help Ukraine restore its pre-war borders. He also derided Russia’s campaign as faltering and called it a “paper tiger,” while signaling the U.S. would continue supplying weapons to NATO allies.

The statement marks a notable shift from Trump’s previous public stance urging a negotiated settlement that could have required Kyiv to cede land. It follows an in-person session with Zelenskyy in New York that Kyiv sought to use to stiffen sanctions and energy restrictions on Russia.

No immediate details were released on any new U.S. measures.

Zelenskyy has pressured Washington and European capitals for tighter Russian energy sanctions and greater air-defense coordination as Russia’s assault continues.

This is a developing story. It will be updated when more information becomes available.
