Stan Lee Hologram Debuts at L.A. Comic Con With Photo Ops and Conversations

Photo ops and short conversations with a lifelike Stan Lee hologram headline this year’s show.

L.A. Comic Con will debut a new “Stan Lee Experience” that lets attendees pose for photos and hold short, interactive conversations with a lifelike hologram of the late Marvel co-creator. The convention lasts three days, from September 26 to 28, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

The activation will take up about 1,500 square feet on the exhibition floor, with scheduled group Q&As and a few limited one-on-one sessions, according to the organizers.

There is an extra fee to enter the covered booth, and there are different prices for taking pictures and having short conversations. Proto Hologram and Hyperreal, two companies known for display and character work, built the technology that runs the hologram.

Fans are already debating the boundary between tribute and commercialization when bringing back the voice and image of a creator who died in 2018 at the age of 95.

For many people, the appeal is getting to talk to a faithful likeness of the man whose name is on generations of comic book heroes. Some people don’t like recreations of deceased people, especially when they entail paid meet-and-greets. They want the industry to be more open about how estates and event planners can use a famous person’s image.

Comic Con in Los Angeles is still one of the major pop-culture events in the city. It attracts people with celebrity panels, exclusive screenings, and a vendor floor that takes up several halls. The show starts on Friday afternoon and goes until Sunday night. Ticket information and the schedule are available on the event’s official channels.
