Nepal: PM Karki names first woman attorney general, moves to seat five-member interim cabinet

Interim PM advances cabinet picks after protests; elections slated for March 5, 2026.

VT Staff | Kathmandu: On Sunday, Nepal’s Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki named Savita Bhandari Baral as the new attorney general. She is the first woman to hold the position.

The president’s office said that President Ram Chandra Paudel has already accepted the resignation of Attorney General Ramesh Badal, which made it possible for Bhandari to be appointed.

Karki also began talks to choose five ministers for a temporary cabinet, the Prime Minister’s office source said.

Local media outlets also reported that Karki’s office has sped up the process of forming a government and is in talks with at least five potential ministers.

Karki, a former chief justice, took the oath of office late Friday after Gen-Z-led protests prompted K.P. Sharma Oli to step down. She is the first woman to lead a government in Nepal.

After she took the oath of office, Parliament was dissolved. New national elections will be held on March 5, 2026.

Authorities say that at least 72 people died and more than 2,100 were hurt during the protests.

Karki has promised to pay 10 Lakh rupees (1 million) to the relatives of those who died and to help the injured get medical care.
