BREAKING : Nepal Army Suggests Emergency Options to President Amid Political Crisis

Army briefs the President on emergency paths while Gen-Z leaders and Sushila Karki hold firm on dissolving Parliament first.

The Nepal Army has reportedly suggested emergency state options to President Ram Chandra Poudel due to country’s worst political crisis, with death tolls from youth-led protests reaching 34 and the military effectively taking control of the streets.

The latest development occurs as the constitutional crisis has gotten worse due to delays in establishing an interim government. In the midst of continuing political impasse and violent protests that have set government buildings on fire throughout Kathmandu, President Poudel is finding it difficult to assist in the appointment of a new prime minister.

Sudan Gurung, a Gen-Z leader and also the president of the Nepal Foundation, stated that they remain firm in their stance on dissolving Parliament. He warned that failing to dissolve it could result in the return of the old leadership. Mentioning that they haven’t had direct communication with the President, he said, “We spoke with the President’s secretary and legal advisors. “I told them I want to speak directly with the President–I don’t recognize the rest of you”, he said to the reporters. “Bring the President here, I also said I won’t engage in talks without my Gen-Z team,” he added

The Gen-Z leader further noted that there was no conversation on Friday between interim Prime Minister nominee Sushila Karki and President Ramchandra Paudel. However, Karki has maintained that she will not accept the Prime Ministerial appointment unless Parliament is dissolved, in line with the Gen-Z movement’s mandate.

“She has insisted: First, dissolve Parliament, then appoint the Prime Minister. The new government will announce elections and fulfill its responsibilities. That’s the mandate of the movement,” said an official at Sheetal Niwas. They added that efforts are ongoing to reach a consensus.
