A top gynecologist in Assam, India is under investigation from the heath department after doing 21 emergency cesarean section (C-section) deliveries in one shift.
According to a report from the Assam Tribune, a local news outlet, Dr. Kantheswar Bordoloi, the senior medical officer at Morigaon Civil Hospital, Assam, did 21 lower-segment caesarean section (LSCS) deliveries between 3:40 p.m. local time on September 5 and 1:50 a.m. on September 6. Dr. Kanteshwar Bordoloi, a prominent gynecologist at Morigaon Civil Hospital, has been requested to explain how he did 21 emergency lower-segment cesarean sections in around 10 hours between late September 5 and early September 6. The order comes after an official memo from Nitisha Bora, the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Health), raised concerns about the “unusually high” number of procedures.
The outlet reports that the surgeries took conducted in the hospital’s main operating room from 3:40 p.m. on September 5 until 1:50 a.m. on September 6. The health department wanted to know if the right steps were taken to sterilize tools and perform surgery, and if the paperwork before and after the surgery fulfilled the needed criteria.
The memorandum also noted that the case records were not good enough, which can make it harder to control infections and raise the risks of illness and death for mothers and babies. Within three days, Dr. Bordoloi had to send in round reports for each case, including information about preparation, following the protocols for sterilization, any signs of fetal distress, and the duties of the staff that helped.
The Assam Tribune quotes Dr. Bordoloi as saying that he defended his actions by saying that he addressed situations “one after another” and that “all necessary medical procedures were followed.” He further indicated that 19 patients were sent home and one was sent to GMCH. He said he had already sent in his explanation.
District health authorities are still looking at the matter; no final decision has been made.
