Trump says Israel struck Hamas in Doha, Qatar; calls incident “an opportunity for peace”

Trump says the Qatar strike was Netanyahu’s call, urges peace, and vows such an incident won’t recur on Qatari soil while pushing a U.S.–Qatar defense deal.

President Donald Trump said that the U.S. military notified his administration this morning that Israel was attacking Hamas “in a section of Doha, the Capital of Qatar,” according to a statement he posted on Truth Social.

The strike was “a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu,” not by him, President Trump clarified. He said unilaterally bombing inside Qatar–a sovereign nation and close U.S. ally working to broker peace–“does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” while adding that eliminating Hamas is “a worthy goal.”

Trump said that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has been directed to inform Qatari officials of the impending attack, but that the message arrived “too late to stop the attack.” He described Qatar as a strong ally and friend of the United States, said he felt badly about the location of the strike, and called for the release of all hostages and the return of the dead, saying he wants the war to end “NOW.”

The president said he spoke with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after the strike and that the Israeli leader “wants to make Peace.” He also said he spoke with the Emir and Prime Minister of Qatar, thanked them for their support and friendship, and assured them “such a thing will not happen again on their soil.”

Trump said he directed Secretary of State Marco Rubio to finalize a Defense Cooperation Agreement with Qatar.

Background: Earlier today, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced they worked with Israel’s internal security service (ISA/Shin Bet) to carry out a “precise strike” against the top commanders of Hamas. The statement said that the people being targeted have been in charge of Hamas activities for years, were “directly responsible” for the attacks on October 7, and have been running the war against Israel since then. The IDF stated it would “keep working hard” against Hamas.

The military stated in a post on X that they employed precision weapons and extra intelligence and took efforts to protect civilians.

In the first post, the military didn’t include names, numbers of dead and injured, or a specific location.
