Tragedy has struck India’s aviation sector as all 242 passengers and crew aboard Air India flight AI171 were confirmed dead following a crash shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad.
The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, which departed Ahmedabad at 13:38 local time en route to London Gatwick, crashed minutes into flight. The aircraft was carrying 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, one Canadian, and seven Portuguese nationals, according to Air India.
The airline initially confirmed an accident occurred shortly after takeoff and said injured passengers were being rushed to hospitals. However, by late Thursday evening, local police confirmed to the Indian Express that no survivors had been found.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Aviation experts and local authorities have launched an inquiry, while Air India said it will cooperate fully with regulators and investigators.

⚠️UPDATES:⚠️ Only one person, Ramesh Viswashkumar, survived the crash, India Today reported. He was seated in 11A and managed to exit through the emergency door just before the aircraft erupted in flames. Witnesses and emergency teams confirmed he walked away injured but alive.
